“What’s your story?”
This is the second most frequent question I get asked by people in the construction industry. I figured it’d be a good way to start, so you have an idea of who I am as you read these posts and check out the little squares I post on Instagram.
My name is Kathryn. I’m a 2016 Virginia Tech graduate. I studied building construction and psychology. I would have gone on to pursue a Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, but I realized hiring, training, and growing careers can be done without an additional degree. I was getting antsy and wanted a break from school! Construction, I decided, allowed me to pursue a variety of roles.
I’ve always been excited about this space. Understanding architecture and construction have been on my mind most of my life. Though I had no understanding of the logistics of construction, I loved attending my parents’ meetings with the developer, walking through all the phases of our house. (Check out that throwback photo from the our first home!).
It wasn’t until I graduated high school and started at a community college, that I realized construction was a great fit for me. I could take aspects and theories I have learned in psychology and apply it to the way I approach the industry and the people in it. So I began pursuing it, and actually understanding it.
Now that I’ve been out for almost four years, I’ve learned more than I could have imagined, worked with people who have challenged me (both positively and negatively), and am fully aware that there is still so much out there for me to experience. I have boots on the ground, and I run my own jobs. I am here to share those take aways and strategies that have helped me launch my career, one I am proud of. But can I say I truthfully feel ready to put it all out there? Are you ready?
I am not, but I’m going to do it anyways. Even if it scares me. Because, guys, imposter syndrome is real, right here, right now, as you read this. But, it’s not going to stop me. It is time we talk more about this industry – the highs and the lows!
So…
What’s YOUR story?
